STEM Family Day

History and science come together in a day of activities focusing on the role of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) in the past and present of the Minneapolis riverfront.

Families can:
- Learn about kitchen chemistry in a Baking Lab demonstration
- Discover how simple machines helped the Washburn A Mill operate and design a solution to a mill problem using K'nex
- Solve the "Mystery of the Disappearing Waterfall" in a geology activity led by National Park Service rangers
- Become a Junior Ranger by completing a Paleontology activity booklet by the National Park Service
- Make an eco-friendly cleanser with the Mississippi Watershed Management Organizations
- See a flour dust explosion demonstration and learn the science behind the Washburn A Mill explosion of 1878
- Enjoy a performance by History Player William de la Barre, the Austrian-born waterpower engineer
- Operate a small generator to see how electricity is created at St. Anthony Falls hydroelectric plants
- Explore the importance of waterpower in Minneapolis in the Water Lab
- Learn about kitchen chemistry in the Baking Lab
